Founded in Melbourne in 2024, Okkeira Shuzo is all about reimagining the timeless art of sake for modern, everyday enjoyment. Our premium-grade sake premixes and straight up pure sakes are handcrafted with care—from the slow, intentional magic of koji making to the final pour. Every drop blends centuries of Japanese tradition with a crisp Australian twist, using locally sourced ingredients and pure Aussie water to create something truly unique.
What’s in a Name?
Our name, Okkeira, is a tribute to an extraordinary bond between a man and his dog.
For 20 years, Keira - a spirited Australian cattle dog - was the inseparable companion of our founder, Okkey Sumiyoshi, a Japanese-born sake brewer living in Melbourne. Keira couldn’t stand beer, but one day surprised Okkey by licking the neck of an empty sake bottle. It was unexpected. And delightful.
That small, strange moment inspired a legacy.
Though Keira passed in 2019 at the impressive age of 20, her memory lives on. Her name, combined with Okkey’s, became Okkeira—a symbol of devotion, creativity, and life’s beautiful quirks.
